about

Paul Klee wrote 'One eye sees, the other eye feels' and in a sense Suvome's The Sunlight Embassy presents a widescreen soundscape that works on similar principles. Coming out of nowhere in the late 90s and perhaps even more strange, a certain kind of nowhere being Adelaide, Australia. There's no bright-eyed beach BBQ tunes to be found here, rather there's complex song based narratives of politics, consumerism, long winters and empty hotel rooms.

Sonically wide the music has a certain kind of noir that holds together a patchwork of influences that listeners will be familiar with. The vocal work of Jenni Lush is an emotional force that bonds the sound and lyrics to an uncertain and hypnotic space. The Sunlight Embassy is adventurous and at times too complex but repeated listens reveal more shape, more detail and more depth, which is as surprising as it is compelling.

Jason Reid

The Sunlight Embassy was critically acclaimed as a debut album and the band went on to tour nationally, followed by festivals and club shows in Japan on route to relocating to the UK. After a number of shows in England and protracted negotiations with the publishing company Rough Trade in London and record label Rocket in the US the band wanted to move on and returned to Australia briefly in 2001 to record the mini album Subomu.
